That is kind of hard to explain to someone who is new to these things but the first thing I do is search for an nice usable photo for the background. Once you done that, put a couple of filters on the picture and adjust the color to your needs. The next you do is create an image in your head of what you like to see in the end-result and try to work that out with different shapes, self created objects, brushes, etc.
